A detailed architects drawing of a cavity wall used to make a U Value Calculation

U Value Calculations

U Values can be  described as ‘A measure of the ability of a building element or component to conduct heat from a warmer environment to a cooler environment’. These form an essential part of ADL2021 compliance for either  SAP calculations or SBEM calculations.

There are a few ways you can obtain the U Values for your next or current construction project. Here are a few tips in finding U Values:

  • Products such as new windows or doors will come with a  manufacturers certificate showing the U-Value. Save this certificate!

  • A manufacturer of construction elements will usually have a data sheet with the thermal properties of the element listed and pre-approved. Its worth downloading and keeping that with your build records.

  • If there is no information, you can e-mail the manufacturer to ask for the U Values of their product. Again, save the email thread somewhere safe to show to your SAP Assessor or to Building Control.

  • We can provide you with an approved U Value Calculation for a building element, such as a wall, floor roof etc.

To ensure the U Values we provide are as accurate as possible, we will need an exact description as possible of the wall, window, roof etc. where your U Value is required (usually these details are on the architects plans) and the proposed insulation and products top be used. You can see an example below of how a U-Value is accurately calculated and built up based on supplied details.

In this example, the value was calculate for an insulated cavity wall with a 'dot and dab' insulated plasterboard and plaster finish.

We can also provide Condensation Risk Analysis Reports should an investigation needed as to the most suitable materials for older wall/ roofs floors etc. to prevent rot.

Part G Water Efficiency Calculations

Part G of the Building Regulations requires that new build projects do not exceed the maximum water useage per person per day.

We often provide Design Stage or As Built Stage calculations for SAP or SBEM Projects demonstrating how this can be achieved in that project.

Note for clients: Water usage Products (such as WC's, Showers, Taps etc.) need careful selection when procuring to ensure these don't exceed the permitted limits allowed in Part G. There are many products on the UK market which simply wouldn't be suitable for a New Build SAP Project

Part O Overheating Calculations

On June 15th, 2022 the Building Regulations introduced  a new 'Part O'.

This focuses on details to ensure properties do not suffer from summer overheating (Previously buildings could be constructed super air tight and super insulated without thinking of the implications of a hot British summer and people working from home during a  pandemic!).

We can provide a calculation and compliance report using the simplified method, as outlined in part O.

Please feel free to contact me if you are unsure about Part O and its implications. I can work with you or your project team to find solutions to help your project over these important compliance hurdles without having to reduce your glazing.
